ForestHQ facilitates the creation and management of forest properties.
The first step to start with ForestHQ is to create your forest property and define its boundaries.
The "Create Forest" button is located on the top-left of the Forest & Operations List panel.
There are different options to create a forest. Pick the option that best describes your case.
For simple forest boundaries, you can just start with the manual drawing.
With this option you can draw your forest property boundaries manually.
For Irish users, you can also get your forest boundaries from the Irish Forestry Service using this option.
You can import an SHP or KML file containing the boundaries of your forest
Note that this option will only import the boundaries and not other information that you may have in these files. If you have forest compartment names in your file, use the third option
For more complex forests with compartment and sub-compartments names, you can use the ForestHQ import tool.
This option is useful if you have a larger number of forests in a spatial database with the compartment and sub-compartments names.
Large areas of forest are usually organised in different units. These units may vary depending on the country or organisation. ForestHQ allows the user to create or import different levels of forest organisation. These are the levels that can be defined in ForestHQ.
REGION: This is mainly used for large companies with forests across different countries or regions (counties, states, etc.)
FOREST: Forest property defined in a specific area.
COMPARTMENT: Forest subdivision for organisational purposes (used in large forest areas).
SUB-COMPARTMENT: The compartments can be divided into different sub-compartments for management purposes (areas with similar forest stand conditions: same species, plant year, etc).
STRATA: This is a subdivision of the sub-compartments only used within the activities to mark temporary changes in the forest stand (e.g. different wood quality, windblown trees, etc). This is a handy tool provided by ForestHQ to map the forest more accurately looking and areal imagery or other remote sensing data.
Depending on your forest organisation you may only have some of these levels.
In addition to the forest organisational levels, ForestHQ also provides an operations layer. Operations are created when an activity is assigned to some of the Sub-compartments (E.g. inventory or field survey, harvesting, etc.). You can learn more about operations here.
