The following video tutorial outlines the steps involved in creating a forest and manually drawing its boundaries.
For Irish users, you can also get your forest boundaries from the Irish Forestry Service.
A more detailed description can be found below:
The "Create Forest" button is located on the top-left of the Forest List panel.
This section explains the option: "Manually Draw Forest Boundaries".
Fill out the required information:
Forest Name/Identifier (mandatory): Unique name or ID for the forest that shall be used for identification.
Familiar name: If your company uses codes as an identifier, you can also add an additional descriptive name (e.g. Duff hill, John's Forest, etc.)
Addtional Inforamtion (optional)
Description: Custom information about the forest.
Region: When working with several properties, you can organise your forests in regions (e.g. country, state, county, etc.). Type the name of the region.
Status: used to organize a company's forests by stage of management.
Owner: Choose a forest Owner from the contact list. You can use the option to "create a new person/company" to add a new contact.
Manager: Choose a forest Manager from the contact list. You can use the option to "create a new person/company" to add a new contact.
Forest Address: Forest address details
Press “Create Forest” to continue.
Find your forest on the map
Use the address bar to find a town nearby.
Use the scroll wheel or the zoom buttons to zoom in and out.
Find the area of interest by panning the map
Draw your forest
The forest boundary layer is placed in the panel on the right: "Forest Block"
Click on the pencil icon to open drawing tools
To start editing, use the "Add a new polygon" button
To draw the forest boundary click on the map at each node point. To finish, double-click or press enter.
The "Undo" and "Redo" tools are available during the editing.
You can add as many polygons as required.
Modify an existing polygon
If you want to modify an existing polygon, just draw a new polygon on top and chose any of the available options:
Create New Block (respect existing): This will create a new forest boundary with the extent of the new polygon. If the new polygon overlies an existing one, the existing one will not be modified,
Create New Block (respect modify): This will create a new forest boundary with the extent of the new polygon. If the new polygon overlies an existing one, the existing one will be modified to match the new polygon.
Cut existing Block: If the new polygon overlies an existing one, the overlying section will be removed.
Split existing Block: If the new polygon overlies an existing one, the existing polygon will be split by the overlying area.
Extent existing Block: If a forest polygon already exist, this will be extended to the new polygon boundary
Discard drawing: This will discard the drawing.
Merge two or more polygons
To Merge blocks click on the "Merging" button on the drawing toolbox.
Select the polygons to merge by selecting them in the map with the mouse.
Click "Merge shapes" to merge the polygons
Note: The resulting polygon will inherit the name from the first block selected.
The forest compartments and sub-compartments names, and additional information can be edited in the attribute table.
Click on the table icon beside the sub-compartments layers to see the attribute table.
To edit the attributes, just double-click in the table cell that you want to edit.
Do not forget to click the save button on the top right of the table when you are finished.
After creating the forest, go to the "Metadata" section.
2. In the Metadata view. Select the "Edit" option on the top menu.
3. Zoom to your area of interest. Use the address bar to find a town nearby or use the scroll wheel of your mouse to zoom in your area of interest.
3. In the map section on the right, enable the "Select Forest Boundaries" option.
4. When this option is selected, the Forest Boundaries should be showing on the map.
Note that boundaries are only shown when you zoom on a small region of the map. If you cannot see the boundaries you may need to zoom further.
5. You can select one or more polygons with the mouse. The selected boundaries are shown in dark blue.
Press the "Update" button when the selection is finished.
The selected boundaries are now part of your Forest.
