FOREST MEASUREMENT AND VALUATION

2.1 Map Productive Zone

Before the start measuring it is good practice to plan your activity.

GIS tools are provided to make an inventory plan. This includes the delineation of Productive Areas and the creation of maps that you can print out or download to the TM field app.

Before start, you would need to create a valuation and measurement activity, if you did not do this before.

Within the activity, the right-side panel shows the workflow to follow in each case. All the valuation activities have the following steps:

steps to Map Productive Zones

steps to Map Productive Zones

To improve the valuation and estimation of timber product yield, the Forest can be subdivided with the help of the background imagery.

Areas without trees, such as roads, streams, and other clearings can be removed by editing the Productivity Zones

Productivity Zones are usually defined as areas of the forest with similar characteristics (same spices and plant year, similar production, etc.)

The background images can be used to map the different areas. You can learn more about the background images in section 1.4.1 Background Images

- Draw Productivity Zones

To start editing click on the edit tool (pencil icon) in the Producitiy Zones layer.

To proceed the user should draw a polygon using the "add new polygon" icon in the editing bar.

Draw the polygon where you want to create the new strata and follow the instructions

The following options are available:

  • Split Strata to split the area from existing productivity zones into 2 different strata

  • Trim Strata to delete area highlighted by the polygon

  • Create a new productivity zone (fill gaps). Create a new productivity zone within the polygon boundaries. In case this polygon intersects an exiting polygon, the existing polygon will not be affected.

This option is good to fill gaps overlapping existing polygons without begin afraid to modify the existing polygons.

  • Create a new productivity zone (overwrite). Create new strata within the polygon boundaries. In case this polygon intersects an exiting polygon, the existing polygon will be modified.

- Merge Productivity Zones

The merging Strata tool will merge two or more Strata to a single one

To Merge strata click on the "Start Selecting" button

Select Blocks to merge by clicking in each strata with the mouse

Click Merge shapes to merge the blocks

** The Blocks will inherit the name and attributes from first block selected.

- Productive Zones Table

The Productive Zones has an attribute table where the user can change the colors and names of each area.

The Data Collection Procedure section explains to the user the step to follow depending on the method used to collect the data.

Three different methods are available:

  • Arboreal Forest app (iOS).

  • TM Field Forest app (calipers/hypsometers.)

  • Import data from Excel/CSV
